Where INNOVATION Meets OPPORTUNITY

Case Study

Building Beijing’s First Startup Ecosystem for
International Students

Despite being home to over 100,000 international students, Beijing had no focused startup pathway for this dynamic population. Barriers included unclear policies, fragmented resources, and the absence of a dedicated support platform. Our objectives:

  • Ignite a culture of innovation among international students
  • Centralize policy guidance, prototyping tools, workspace, and mentorship
  • Inspire high-potential teams to build ventures addressing real pain points in China and globally
  • Create a scalable pipeline directly feeding into flagship events like ITEC

Designing the Ecosystem

  • Stakeholder Alignment: With strong support from the Chaoyang District Bureau of Talent Work, we gained official recognition and direct access to local policy channels. This allowed us to provide up-to-date policy briefings and facilitate government engagement for international founders.
  • University Partnerships: We co-launched a dedicated Entrepreneurship Service Center at UIBE (University of International Business and Economics) and established close working relationships with other leading universities in Beijing. This expanded our reach and fostered a collaborative culture.
  • Hands-On Skills Development: Through office hours, workshops, and mentorship from seasoned founders and industry experts, participants learn the essentials of building and scaling lean startups.
  • Comprehensive Post-Program Support: Our dedicated service package covers company registration, workspace, legal and compliance consulting, funding introductions, and tailored mentorship—addressing every major challenge faced by international founders in Beijing.

2025 Snapshot:

  • 120+ applications from 77 countries and 32 universities
  • 37 founders selected (based on novelty, team, and market)
  • Diversity:
    • 26 nationalities
    • 14 undergraduates/exchange students
    • 23 Master’s & PhD candidates
    • Sectors: Deep Tech, HealthTech, AI & Software, Social Impact, GreenTech, Logistics

Demo Day & Recognition:

12 startups pitched at the final Demo Day. 5 teams received the full Startup Support Package (company registration, 4 weeks free office space, legal + compliance consulting). Over half of the winners from the past two cohorts remain active, several having reached revenue-generating stages.

What’s Next:

Venture Builders is redefining entrepreneurship for international students in Beijing. The program’s scalable model, backed by government and university partnerships, ensures long-term impact. The next cohort, launching in February 2026, will build on this success, expanding outreach to more universities and disciplines. By continuing to provide hands-on training, policy support, and incubation, the program aims to empower the next generation of global entrepreneurs to address pressing challenges through innovation.
